Current Status
One of the key projects for Providence’s Brownfields program (a Brownfields Showcase Community) is the Woonasquatucket Greenway Project. Through the Brownfields program, the City has assessed and cleaned up two large properties, the 6-acre Riverside Mills property and the 9-acre Lincoln Lace and Braid. The city is now planning for future uses at these sites.
Also in Providence, thanks, in part, to a remedial evaluation report completed using funds from the state’s Assessment Demonstration Pilot, a former gravel pit has been redeveloped into the new Buttonhole Golf Course. This new 9-hole ‘short course’ and its teaching center are helping to make golf a more accessible sport to Rhode Island’s citizens.
The Showcase Community Grant was closed on April 15, 2002 and the Assessment Grant was closed on February 22, 2005.
