Description: States have used municipal solid waste landfills for disposal of potentially contaminated chronic wasting disease (CWD) waste carcasses. Municipal solid waste landfills where disposal occurs should be Part 258 compliant. Landfills withcomposite liner system and leachate collection system are preferrable and the leachate should be recirculated. A 20-foot base of municipal solid waste should be overlain by twelve inches absorbent material. Carcasses should then be placed on top of the absorbent material and lime, cement kiln dust, or other pH caustic should be added to fill the voids. Daily cover requirements include the immediate placement of 3 feet of municipal solid waste and then a final cover of 12 inches of an earthen material. Alternatives include a micro-vault or geomembrane-lined trench.(SUPERCEDED: Hale to Directors, 11/12/04 RO 14732)
