Description: Resource Conservation Challenge works to find strong and diverse markets for scrap tires as a best strategy for diverting scrap tires from going into tire piles, landfills, or the side of the road. Tires are composed of vulcanized rubber, steel wire, and other fibers. Tires cannot simply be melted and formed into the same product again. Only a small amount of scrap tire rubber (3-5%) is incorporated into new tires. It is more efficient to either incinerate them for energy recovery or recycle them into other products. Discussion of types of products made from scrap tires. Cleanup of roadside debris is best handled by the state or local government.
