ACUTE DERMAL TOXICITY (LD50) IN ALBINO RABBITS

Study Information:
Acute/Subacute Toxicity
Unknown Environmental Effects

Summary/Abstract:
[Raltech Scientific Services, Inc.; Acute Dermal Toxicity (LD50) in Albino Rabbits (1978), EPA Document No. 40-7852008, Fiche No. OTS0508134] Acute dermal toxicity was evaluated in a single group of 10 New Zealand White rabbits (5 male and 5 female) receiving a single occluded application of parachlorobenzotrifluoride to abraded skin at a level of 2 ml/kg body weight. The test article was removed from the animals after a 24 hour exposure period. Mortality was observed in 1 female, and the LD50 value was estimated to be greater than 2.0 ml/kg in both males and females. Clinical observations included erythema and edema at 24 hours after application; these effects were not apparent at 72 hours. Gross necropsy observation of decedents, and survivors at 14 days, revealed pitted surfaces on kidneys, scattered red foci on lungs, abscesses between diaphragm and liver surface involving other visceral organs, and adhesion of pericardium with thoracic cavity wall. Microscopic examination of tissue at the application site revealed no significant lesions, other than some desquamation of keratin in 1 animal.
