BOSTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that work is resuming this week at the Centredale Manor Restoration Project in North Providence, R.I. Work was suspended over the winter due to weather.
This phase of the cleanup involves reconstruction of the tailrace (an industrial canal) behind Centredale Manor. This will prevent rainwater from leaching through dioxin-contaminated sediments in the tailrace and carrying contamination into the river. The work, which began in the fall, is being conducted by the potentially responsible parties at the site. EPA is overseeing the work.
To date, Loureiro Engineering Associates, Inc. of Plainville, CT, the contractor hired by the responsible parties to undertake the construction work, completed the following key elements of the cleanup plan:
