Announcement of $15,000 Grant for Lincoln University to Prepare Students Interested in Water Quality Careers

(Kansas City, Kan., April 24, 2012) - EPA and Lincoln University (LU) officials this week will gather in Jefferson City, Mo., to announce a $15,000 grant to provide training for high school and college students interested in water quality careers.

The grant is the result of a partnership agreement signed on January 27, 2012, to prepare students for future careers in water-related environmental and scientific fields.

A Water Boot Camp will be held from July 23, 2012, to July 27, 2012, at Lincoln University for students from LU and local high schools, including Jefferson City High School and Helias Catholic High School in Jefferson City, Mo. Students will become familiar with the essential concepts of water quality, treatment, and the operations and responsibilities of water utilities and professionals who are charged with providing clean, safe, potable water.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Missouri American Water Company will provide experts in water quality to serve as teachers during the boot camp. The educational sessions consist of lectures, group activities, laboratory tasks, tours of facilities, field trips, information about Geographic Information Systems, and water meter testing.

WHO: EPA Region 7 Administrator Karl Brooks, Missouri Department of Natural Resources Director Sara Parker Pauley, and LU Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost Ann Harris

LU is a historically black college located in the capital city of Missouri, Jefferson City. Lincoln was founded in 1866 by the men of the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantries and their white officers, for the special benefit of freed African-Americans.

LU offers a rich resource to address the problem of under representation of African-Americans in science, finance, mathematics, information technologies and environmental specialist fields, in addition to the participation of these minorities in national environmental programs.
