(ATLANTA – September 24, 2007) Developers, land owners and city leaders will learn the value of redeveloping properties and innovative ways to improve the environment at the Sustainable Redevelopment in the Ohio River Valley Conference October 1-3, 2007 at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Ky.

"Sustainable development serves not only the environment, but the economy and community, as well," said Alan Farmer, EPA Regional Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Division Director. "This conference will help facilitate partnerships and innovation that will produce lasting effects for sustainable redevelopment throughout the Ohio River Valley."

"We look forward to showcasing Louisville and all the redevelopment occurring in our city, from the Park Hill corridor to downtown," Mayor Jerry Abramson said. "The conference is an opportunity for leaders of large cities and small towns to learn the best ways to redevelop brownfields and put them back to productive use."

Groups and individuals interested in learning about innovation in developing communities that lead to long-term benefits for the environment, public health and quality of life in communities are invited to attend. Topics at the conference include:

  • identifying the air and water quality, storm water management, ecological, and public health benefits associated with the sustainable redevelopment of cleanup sites;
  • balancing the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability at cleanup sites in urban, suburban, and small town/rural settings;
  • assessing the economics of sustainable development and identifying tools for implementation; and
  • evaluating the political and public perception barriers to sustainable development and exploring approaches to overcome those roadblocks.
