Nine New England Organizations Get Energy Star Awards

- (Boston, Mass. – March 15, 2012) – Nine New England organizations have received 2012 awards from the Energy Star Program.†
“EPA congratulates this year's Energy Star award winners,” said Curt Spalding, regional administrator for EPA’s New England office.† “Their commitment to energy efficiency makes these organizations valuable partners in the effort to save precious resources and reduce harmful air emissions.”
Partner of the Year Awardees
Beacon Capitol Partners, LLC of Boston, Mass. received the Energy Management Award for promoting ENERGY STAR products and practices in their own operations.†
Staples, Inc., of Framingham, Mass. also won in this same category and has received awards in 1999 and 2011. Staples, Inc. is the world’s largest office products retailer serving businesses of all sizes and consumers in 26 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Efficiency Vermont and Vermont Gas Systems, both of Burlington, Vermont, received the Energy Efficiency Program Delivery Award for providing efficient products and services to consumers in their community.† Efficiency Vermont has also won Energy Star awards in 1998, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2011.† It is an independent, nonprofit organization created by the Vermont Legislature and the Vermont Public Service Board to help Vermont residents save energy, strengthen the economy, and protect the environment. They are receiving Energy Star recognition for its exceptional work in the Energy Star New Homes program. Vermont Gas Systems† received an Energy Star award in 2004 and provides energy efficiency programs to its natural gas customers.
Award for Sustained Excellence
HEI Hotels &Resorts of Norwalk, Conn. is a leading hospitality investment company that acquires, develops, owns, and operates full service, upper-scale, and luxury hotels and resorts. It has a current portfolio of 36 hotels totaling more than 8 million square feet throughout the United States. HEI is receiving Energy Star recognition for innovative energy management practices that sustain year-over-year energy savings and expand the energy conservation culture at all levels of the organization. They also won Partner of the Year awards in 2010 and 2011.
Raytheon Company of Waltham, Mass. a technology and innovation leader specializing in defense, homeland security, and other government markets, won and has won awards also in 2001, 2003, and 2007 through 2011.† Employee engagement, starting with the CEO and extending through a team of 26 energy professionals to a network of 1,500 Energy Champions and 37,000 Raytheon Energy Citizens at their 57 locations in the US is the backbone of their program.
The Joint Management Committee of Lexington, Mass. and the Sponsors of the Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships, Inc. (NEEP) (also in Lexington, Mass.) have won for Sustained Excellence in Energy Efficiency Program Delivery. The Joint Management Committee, the sponsor of Massachusetts New Homes with Energy Star program, is a multi-utility and energy efficiency service provider effort that includes Berkshire Gas, Cape Light Compact, Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, New England Gas, National Grid Gas & Electric, NSTAR Gas & Electric, and Western Massachusetts Electric Company.† NEEP has won awards every year since 2000. They started the Northeast Retail Products Initiative, whose mission is to promote energy efficiency in homes and businesses in the Northeast through regionally coordinated programs that increase the use of Energy Star qualified products, services, and practices. NEEP accomplishes this through its sponsoring organizations—Cape Light Compact, National Grid (Massachusetts, Rhode Island), NSTAR Electric, Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECO), NHSaves (National Grid, Unitil, Public Service of New Hampshire, New Hampshire Electric Co-op), Efficiency Vermont, Efficiency Maine, Connecticut Light & Power, The United Illuminating Company, Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).
Award for Excellence in Energy Star Promotion
National Grid of Waltham, Mass was awarded for promoting energy efficient products, homes or buildings that helps to expand the reach of the Energy Star. National Grid has also won awards in 2006, and 2008 through 2011. National Grid is an energy delivery company serving about 3.4 million customers in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island.
ENERGY STAR was started by EPA in 1992 as a market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency.† Today, the Energy Star label can be found on more than 60 products as well as new homes and commercial and industrial buildings that meet strict energy-efficiency specifications set by the EPA.† Last year alone, Americans, with the help of Energy Star, saved $18 billion on their energy bills while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 33 million vehicles.
