FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., May 12, 2008) - By bicycling and carpooling, a group of EPA Region 7 employees will take further steps today toward reducing their carbon footprints as they participate in the Car-Free Challenge, a weeklong initiative aimed at encouraging residents of the Kansas City metro area to consider alternatives to traveling alone by automobile.

The Car-Free Challenge, which runs through Friday, May 16, is organized by a group of local volunteers and supported by various businesses and organizations who are donating prizes and services in sponsorship of more than 60 related events. The Car-Free Challenge is just one of the events planned for the official local observance of Bike Week.

Participants in the community-wide Car-Free Challenge have signed up for a friendly competition to see how many solo car trips they can replace by biking, walking, carpooling, or taking the bus for their regular work commutes and errand-running activities. Among the participants will be at least nine employees of EPA Region 7, eight of whom have pledged to ride bicycles. One intends to carpool with other coworkers.

Organizers of the Car-Free Challenge are hoping to sign up at least 1,000 people to participate in this year's event, which offers prizes to the most successful participants in several categories, including one for first-timers.
