Dear Dr. Marty:

Thank you for your letter of June 16, 2008, regarding the proposed revisions to the national ambient air quality standards (NAAQS) for lead (Pb) signed by the Administrator on May 1, 2008. The Administrator based his decisions on a thorough review of the best available science. The complete proposal, along with accompanying explanatory information, is available on the web at http://www.epa.gov/air/lead/actions.html.

I appreciate the participation by the Children’s Health Protection Advisory Committee (CHPAC) in reviewing and providing comments on the notice of proposed rulemaking, particularly given the rapid timeline on which the NAAQS review for lead is progressing. I share your commitment and that of the Committee to reducing children’s lead exposures. As we move forward in developing the final rulemaking for this review, we will take into account your comments regarding the role of the NAAQS in protecting communities from the dangers of lead pollution and on specific elements for the NAAQS. In developing the Agency’s final decision on the lead NAAQS, we will be considering the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC) advice and recommendations as well as the comments from stakeholder groups, including the CHPAC, and from the general public.
