Project Title & Description
Improving Alaska's Safe Drinking Water Information System
The ADEC currently receives PWS analytical data in many different formats requiring interpretation by ADEC staff prior to data entry. Hard copy (paper) analytical results are sent by laboratories and PWS owners and operators to ADEC either by courier, mail, or facsimile. ADEC staff review the paper documents and manually enter the sample results into the SDWIS/State PWS database The current paper-based manual data reporting by the laboratories and data entry into ADEC SDWIS database consumes time and limited staff resources. The cumbersome and lengthy data entry process greatly increases the amount of time between receipt of the monitoring data and the staffs ability to evaluate compliance. This can lead to inaccurate compliance monitoring schedules and inefficient use of ADEC staff time. Additional delays in analytical data reporting or PWS operational reports can be caused by lost mail, infrequent mail stops in rural Alaska, or late reporting.
This project will provide a more efficient data collection and management system by allowing certified labs to directly submit analytical data electronically to the SDWIS/State PWS database. Automation of this process will increase staff efficiency, improve PWS data quality and more importantly, improve access to sample results by both the DW Program staff and the PWS owners and operators.
