Project Title & Description
Characterization of Ship Particulate Emissions
Field measurements of light absorption, which is a proxy for black carbon, and light extinction by ambient particulate matter will be made using photoacoustic and cavity-ringdown spectrometers on board the R/V Atlantis along the California coast as part of the CalNex field campaign. Emphasis on regions near large shipping ports will help characterize PM emissions from ships using measurements with high temporal resolution. Ship plume ageing experiments will be conducted by intercepting plumes from individual vessels at different downwind distances.
