Technology Cooperation

Back

Technology is an important component in the efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and enhance GHG sinks (vegetation and soils that absorb and store significant amount of CO2 ). With growing populations and rising affluence projected for much of the world, the role of climate-friendly technology will grow even more critical.

To increase its positive impact, technology must be both developed and deployed where it will have an optimum environmental effect. To a large degree, this will call for technology cooperation between nations, the private sector, non-governmental organizations, and international organizations.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) recognized the importance of technology cooperation and encouraged Parties to "Promote and cooperate in the development, application and diffusion, including transfer, of technologies…"

A number of technology cooperation programs have been initiated with a wide range of activities, but with a common goal-to encourage the use of technologies that will reduce GHG. The EPA is currently involved in the Technology Cooperation Agreement Pilot Project. Additionally, the EPA was formerly involved with the Climate Technology Initiative Exit EPA as well as a Technology Transfer Consultative Process completed under the aegis of the UNFCCC.

For more information on energy technologies, visit the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology. Exit EPA CREST provides a comprehensive web site for access to information on sustainable and renewable energy technologies. CREST contains documents, databases, discussion groups, and software, along with indexed and annotated links to a large number of related web sites worldwide.
