October 24-26, 2006 - Symposium on Western Fuels: 20th International Conference on Lignite, Brown, and Subbituminous Coals in Denver, Colorado. The goal of the Symposium on Western Fuels is to provide a forum in which industry, government, and research organizations can share up-to-date information on the role of lignite, brown, and subbituminous coals in meeting future energy demands. Low-rank fuels have unique properties that present challenges and opportunities related to meeting future environmental regulations and in the development and application of advanced technologies. The 20th Symposium will include the following session topics: Fuel Properties and Upgrading, Environmental Issues and Control Technologies, Carbon Sequestration, and more. October 23-27, 2006 - NOAA's 31st Annual Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop in Boulder, Colorado. Our gathering this year will focus on three themes: (i) climate predictions/predictability, (ii) climate attribution, and (iii) the NOAA Climate Test Bed. We will combine presentations on existing, as well as recent advances in scientific understanding and capabilities with discussions on requirements for decision support. The outcome of this year’s workshop will include an assessment of current operational prediction capabilities, identifying opportunities for advance, and exploring new products to support regional decision making. The workshop will provide enhanced opportunity for participants to exchange information, ideas, and opinions through panel discussions and thematic, focus talks. For more information visit the conference website.

October 24-27, 2006 - Entsorga-Enteco in Cologne, Germany. October 24-27, 2006 - Rapid Climate Change International Science Conference in Birmingham, United Kingdom. Some models predict that rapid (decadal-scale) climate change could occur under the scenario of global warming that is likely to happen over the next century. The Atlantic Ocean's thermohaline circulation (THC) is thought to have played a key role in rapid changes in the past and to have the potential to do so in the future, although other processes may also cause rapid climate change to occur. This conference will explore the scientific understanding of rapid climate change, with a main but not exclusive focus on the role of the THC in such change. For more information visit the conference website. Exit EPA

October 26-27, 2006 - CARBON EXPO ASIA 2006 - in Beijing, China. October 31-November 4, 2006 - GWEA 2006: Symposium on Impact Evaluation of Global Warming and Approach to Risk in Taipei, Taiwan. The symposium focuses on (1) Features and connotations of the climate change in East Asia , (2) Impacts on ecosystem and adaptation, (3) Impacts on food production and adaptation, (4) Impacts on human health and society , (5) Risk as sessment on global warming , to visualize impact of global warming in the near future and examine risks of the effects. As a consequence, when the situation of East Asia becomes well-defined, a wealth of new knowledge will be attained regarding the climate change impacts at a level that would prevent the area from anthropogenic interference, which is the ultimate goal in the international framework of the global warming study. November 6-17, 2006 - Responding to Climate Change 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya. Whilst it is widely accepted the consequences of global warming will fall disproportionately upon developing countries, the developed world will also experience the effects of climate change. The extreme climatic events of 2005 may be an indication that the increased frequency of such events, predicted to be a cause of climate change, is finally starting to occur. This increase can only confound the notion that climate change is an unquestionably international problem that must be tackled holistically by all sectors of society across the globe.
