Emission Reduction: partnership with Corning and Syracuse China to reduce lead releases

The 1997 Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) data identified Corning Inc. and Syracuse China Manufacturing Co. as the top two releasers of lead and lead compounds in New York State. The purpose of this project was to identify the unit operations of the glass and ceramic processes at the two companies that contribute to high emissions of lead, and to assist in implementing cost effective solutions. As a result of this project, as well as other factors, the level of lead used in the glass and china processes at both companies is decreasing; the release of lead to airways from both companies reflects this reduction.
