This paper develops methods for analyzing diary data that address dependencies among responses on successive days and among respones of the same subject on different days and illustrates the use of these methods by analyzing data collected in a diary study conducted as part of the Six Cities Study of Air Pollution and Health. The methods described in this report model the incidence rather that the prevalence of symptoms, with incidence defined as a positive report of symptom occurrence by an individual who did not report that symptom on the previous day. This strategy evolved from preliminary analyses which established that the respiratory symptoms under study had low prevalence relates and which also suggested that the incidence and recurrence of symptoms might have different mechanisms requiring different explanatory models.
