This study explores the impact of adjustments in output and input prices, and cropping and location patterns that agricultural markets and growers make in response to altered levels of air pollution, which are largely neglected in most studies of the impacts of pollution on agriculture. The report contains an introduction (Chapter 1) and three essays. The first essay (Chapter 2) employs a mathematical programming technique to assess 1976 air pollution-induced losses to fourteen of southern California's most highly valued annual vegetable and field crops. The second (Chapter 3) provides estimates of the losses in earnings that workers in citrus groves bear from the oxidant air pollution to which they are exposed in their work environments. The third (Chapter 4) provides empirical evidence of a moderately strong positive association between a frequently employed measure of the risks faced by agriculturists and increases across space and time in southern California air pollution.
