NCEE sponsors several types of seminars and workshops to share information about environmental economics and science. We have provided a detailed listing of our Upcoming Events.

Seminar Series

Click on the links below for detailed information on each of the series which sponsor seminars and lists/links to the past seminars they have sponsored. Individual seminar listings contain downloadable files showing the presentation slides used in the seminars where available. If you are not a federal government employee and would like to attend a seminar, please contact Carl Pasurka (pasurka.carl@epa.gov) in advance so that you can gain access to the building unless someone else is listed in the seminar wrie-up.

Environmental Economics Seminars

NCEE provides this forum for presentations on timely topics in environmental economics. Researchers from EPA, other federal agencies, and academia present current work, followed by a collegial discussion of this research. Topics are chosen based on relevance to current EPA issues and, more broadly, to issues of concern to the environmental economics research community. These topics include exploration of innovations in economic research methods as well as how research results can be used to improve environmental policy making. See our list of past seminars in this series.

While subject to change, we hold these seminars at least monthly at EPA headquarters. Please check the Upcoming Events page periodically for developing details.

Climate Economics Seminars

EPA's National Center for Environmental Economics (NCEE) is pleased to announce the NCEE Climate Economics Seminar Series. This is a bimonthly seminar series dedicated to examining various issues related to the economics of climate change. On occasion, the series will include presentations on aspects of climate science that are particularly relevant to economics. Upcoming topics include the intersection of technology and pollution control policy, economy-wide versus sector-based approaches, the health impacts of climate change, and competitiveness and leakage issues. See our list of past seminars in this series.

The purpose of this series is to keep EPA offices and interested outside researchers informed of the latest research on issues critical to designing and modeling policies that address climate change. To this end, presenters will be recognized experts in their field of research. The series will complement other climate seminars hosted by EPA that focus on scientific, legal, and other policy areas.

The series will follow the format of the other NCEE seminar series. In general, each seminar will be 90 minutes in length with the first half dedicated to presentation and the remainder reserved for questions and discussion. On occasion, we may arrange to have several researchers participate in a panel discussion. Invitations will be circulated by Carl Pasurka. If you already receive announcements for the other NCEE seminar series, you will receive notice of the climate economic seminars automatically. If you do not receive these notices, please contact Carl to be added to the circulation list (pasurka.carl@epa.gov).

The series started in January, 2008. If you have further questions, please contact Ann Wolverton (wolverton.ann@epa.gov).

Climate Science Seminars

EPA's Office of the Science Advisor (OSA) and National Center for Environmental Economics (NCEE) are pleased to announce a new NCEE/OSA Climate Science Seminar Series. This monthly or bi-monthly seminar series will examine a broad range of climate science issues, that may include: key forecasting challenges, new findings in climate science, human health and ecological impacts, and scientific controversies. See our list of past seminars in this series. Slides and video are available for many of these seminars and can be accessed through the same link.

The objective of this series is for EPA staff, and interested outside researchers, to be well-informed about important emerging issues in climate change science. This series plans to present the best science and a broad spectrum of perspectives that interpret that science. To provide a clear understanding of the latest climate change science, presenters will be selected who are good communicators and are recognized experts in their field of research. This series is intended to complement other climate seminars hosted by EPA that focus on economic, legal, and other policy areas.

In general, the format of each 90-minute seminar will be half presentation and half reserved for questions and discussion. On occasion, we may arrange to have multiple researchers participate in a panel discussion or engage in a dialogue. If you already receive announcements for the other NCEE seminar series, you will receive notice of the climate science seminars automatically. If you do not receive these notices, please contact Carl Pasurka to be added to the circulation list (pasurka.carl@epa.gov). Where available we have provided links to the presentation slides and videos of past seminars (see link below).

If you have further questions, please contact Neil Stiber of OSA (Stiber.Neil@epa.gov).

Workshops

NCEE and EPA's National Center for Environmental Research (NCER) jointly sponsor the Environmental Policy and Economics Workshop Series. The purpose of this series is to hold in-depth workshops on timely topics that will further the use of economics as a tool for environmental decision making. Workshop presenters are primarily drawn from the pool of investigators whose research is funded through EPA and EPA/NSF grants; however, other researchers (e.g., from EPA, other federal agencies, or in academia) often participate.

The goals of the Workshop are to:

Past workshop topics include valuing health risks to children, the validity and use of stated preference methods, and water use and watershed management issues. If you want to find out about future workshops, please subscribe to our email service or watch the News Alert box on our home page. Workshops are free and are generally held in the Washington, DC area.

In addition, NCEE provides a list of external conferences. Please contact us to suggest a conference for our list. NCEE also funds some external workshops such as those at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
