Guemes Island, WA
EPA Region 10 has designated the Guemes Island Aquifer System as Sole Source Aquifer under Section 1424(e) of the Safe Drinking Water Act. EPA proposed the action after receiving a petition from the Guemes Island Property Owners Association who sought the designation to enhance conservation and protection of the island’s limited supply of ground water. EPA review of the petition found that the island’s aquifer system provides the sole source of drinking water to island residents, and there are no feasible alternative sources. The designation was approved following a public participation process that included a 45-day comment period and local public meetings with county government officials and island residents.
EPA reviewed all comments and responded in a document entitled, “Response to Public Comments for the Guemes Island Sole Source Aquifer Proposal.” To receive a copy of this document, or a copy of the “Support Document for Sole Source Aquifer Designation of the Guemes Island Aquifer System” please contact EPA.
