Coal Creek - Ross Electric

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has completed a Five Year Review of the Coal Creek Superfund site, one mile northeast of Chehalis at 346 Coal Creek Road. EPA’s site inspection and review indicate that the remedy is functioning as planned, and people’s health and the environment remain protected. The vegetated landfill cover is in good shape, and fencing around the property continues to limit access. EPA conducts reviews every five years to verify that the remedy remains effective.

The bulk of the Coal Creek cleanup took place in 1993 - 1994. EPA supervised demolition of on-site buildings, excavation and incineration of highly-contaminated soil, and construction of the landfill to contain the treated soil and less-contaminated soil. The primary contaminants of concern were polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and lead.
