Overview:
This workshop is a condensed (four hour) version of the three-day course, “Learning Objectives for Risk Assessment for Air Toxics: Tools for Balancing Science and Judgment”, developed by U.S. EPA. The purpose of this intensive workshop is to give participants an initial introduction to:
- Key concepts and terms related to air toxics risk assessments,
- Basic steps and tools used to conduct and evaluate risk assessments,
- The importance of scoping and planning a risk assessment,
- How balancing rigor and uncertainty within time and resource constraints affects a risk assessment,
- The basic process of, and the information needed to support, risk-based decision making and,
- Resources to aid in conducting and evaluating risk assessments.

The workshop is the recently developed project of the National Environmental Justice Training Collaborative, an informal, multi-stakeholder, national network of people interested in building capacity to deliver effective environmental justice training. It is a highly interactive, thought provoking and "learner centered" experience.
The Fundamentals workshop offered is a one day "compressed" version of the full 3 day workshop. The workshop is useful for all experience levels.

Overview:
This unique workshop has been sought after around the world. It provides insights and strategies for establishing trusting working relationships with communities and other interests groups. A poor relationship is usually where problems start. Often times community concerns and perceptions quickly escalate into anger and perceptions of high risks. This creates delays, more work, and increases fear. Successful relationships are the foundation for effective risk communication and productive problem solving. This workshop will provide a few case studies illustrating the difficulties one might expect and successes that can be achieved. A variety of common problems and misperceptions that can cause alarm will be investigated. Solutions will be developed with you to not only make your job easier and less painful, but also to provide assurances to the public that you are trying to help.

Overview:
Ron Ryan and Anne Pope of EPA's Emission Inventory Group will meet with interested state, local and tribal agency personnel to discuss plans for the 2005 National Emission Inventory (NEI). A retrospective of the 2002 NEI development experience will be presented to review lessons learned. A discussion of the plan for the 2005 NEI will follow with a focus on the timeline for development and changes from NIF 3.0. QA/QC issues and data submittal procedures will also be addressed. The long-term vision for the NEI (beyond 2005) will also be presented. Ample time will be available for discussion of issues of concern to participants.
