Vermiculite Facility List

EPA is identifying and evaluating vermiculite facilities in the United States which received vermiculite ore from the W.R. Grace mine in Libby, Mont. W.R. Grace operated the Libby mine between 1963 and 1990. The mine produced ore which contained high levels of asbestos fibers, and the ore has been associated with observed health impacts on residents of Libby, Montana. Exposure to asbestos may cause serious and potentially fatal diseases, including asbestosis (a restrictive lung disease), lung cancers, or mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining).

EPA developed the attached list of vermiculite facilities that are believed to have operated since 1953. The list compiles information from the U.S. Geological Survey and W.R. Grace. The Agency is determining which of these facilities actually received vermiculite from the Libby mine and whether there are any health or environmental concerns at these sites. The list is evolving and is subject to change as more information becomes available; therefore, EPA cannot verify the accuracy of this list.

EPA is using its authorities under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (commonly known as Superfund) to identify sites that may require cleanup. Following existing Superfund site evaluation procedures, the Agency will screen sites and their surrounding areas on the basis of likely risks and threats and make recommendations for further evaluation or response, as needed.

EPA Regional Offices expect to finish identifying sites by April 30 and to complete preliminary evaluations by June 30.

Press inquiries should call Lauren M. Mical, EPA Office of Media Relations, at 202-260-4358. For further information, interested parties should call the Superfund Hotline at 1-800-424-9346 or 703-412-9810.
