Capture Zone Field Investigation

Driller extruding 5’-7.5’ core section into plastic core bag at PZ5-5’, October 20, 2009. South/Southwest Riverbank in the background (Gasco Siltronic upland areas).
One-foot long screen used at PZ5-5’ (factory-slotted PVC, 0.020-inch slot size), October 20, 2009. Groundwater samples are drawn in through the slotted PVC for analysis of contaminants in groundwater moving towards or from river sediments.
Decontamination of drill pipe on the barge, October 19, 2009. Barge was beached near the PZ-5 cluster location (behind direction of photo).
Driller placing 5-foot long screen section at beginning of installation for PZ5-85, October 18, 2009. Note plastic that the drill rig is placed upon for spill containment. Piezometers will give information on ground water quality discharging to the River in gaining reach areas (where the groundwater discharges to the river). In losing reach areas (where the river recharges groundwater), the samples can show what levels of contaminants might be discharging from the river/sediment to groundwater.
Field work commencing for further characterization at the Gasco-Siltronics site, involving installation of piezometers, and core sampling. Exclusion zone marked at PZ-5; drill rig seen on plastic sheeting containment, October 17, 2009. St. John's bridge is visible in the background.
