Asarco Smelter - Ruston

The Asarco Smelter site is located in Ruston, Washington. It is part of the Commencement Bay/Nearshore Tideflats Superfund Site.

We have been asked a number of questions about the cleanup at the former Asarco Smelter site. Some of these frequently asked questions are directly related to the EPA cleanup and some are related to the development of Point Ruston. Point Ruston-Former Asarco Smelter FAQ (PDF) (12pp., 106KB)

Remediation Information Center

The Remediation Information Center (formerly Asarco Information Center), staffed by MRC Construction, is managing the residential sampling and cleanup of properties in the Ruston and North Tacoma Study Area Zones. If you are a resident in this area and would like to know the status of your property, please call the Remediation Information Center at 253-759-6015. Hours of operation are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.

The Remediation Information Center can provide the following information:

  • Results of yard sampling
  • Date your property was cleaned up
  • Results of re-sampling after cleanup
  • Whether you are on the list to have your property sampled
  • Whether your home is scheduled for sampling and/or remediation this year
If you receive paperwork from the Remediation Information Center about your property, you should keep this information and provide it to new buyers in the event of a sale.

Air Monitoring Data for Point Ruston Construction Activities

Point Ruston is required to conduct air monitoring at three locations around the perimeter of the site whenever there is active construction.

Point Ruston also conducts periodic exposure evaluations with personal air monitoring as work conditions change during the construction process.
