Revegetation at Smelterville Flats
In the 1930s, tailings discharged into the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River from farther upstream were impounded at the area called Smelterville Flats. Subsequent floods destroyed the impoundment, but 1.3 million cubic yards of tailings remained until they were removed to the Central Impoundment Area (CIA) in 1997 and 1998. These photos show Smelterville Flats in summer 1999, right after revegetation.
