EPA Regions 9 & 10 Clean School Bus Request for Proposals
The West Coast Collaborative is requesting proposals aimed at reducing diesel emissions from school buses operating in the Regions 9 and 10 states. RFP announcement

School Bus Emission Calculation Tool
The School Bus Emission Calculation Tool (TOOL) is designed for use by school district fleet managers and state and local air pollution authorities to calculate the air pollution reductions that can be achieved by retrofitting fleets of school buses.

Clean School Bus USA awards, June 2004

Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority, Oregon has received $500,000 for the Oregon Clean School Bus Program to install diesel particulate filters on selected school buses throughout the state. The funds will also be used to partially offset the cost differential of ultra low sulfur diesel at school districts. This effort will be combined with others to build demand and reduce the costs for ultra low sulfur diesel in many areas of Oregon. This project will also help implement the risk reduction strategies of the Portland Air Toxics Assessment.

Clean School Bus USA awards, October 2003

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency received an EPA Grant for the Western Washington Clean Buses, Healthy Kids Retrofit Project proposal submitted by the four Western Washington regional air quality agencies and their partner school districts. This proposal will begin school bus retrofits in small, economically stressed rural public school districts in Western Washington. The districts that are included in this project are:
  • Sedro-Woolley in Skagit County (Northwest Air Pollution Control Authority),
  • Aberdeen/Hoquiam in Grays Harbor County (Olympic Region Clean Air Agency),
  • Centralia/Chehalis in Lewis County (Southwest Clean Air Agency), and
  • South Kitsap in Kitsap County (Puget Sound Clean Air Agency).
These four projects will include EPA-verified diesel oxidation catalysts, and catalyzed diesel particulate filters and ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel as appropriate. This grant will supplement the funding that has been provided by the Washington State Legislature for school bus retro.
    Alaska Efforts
    • (Retrofit) While ultra-low sulfur fuel is not available in Alaska at this time the Anchorage School District has retrofitted 74 school buses with diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs)
    • (CNG) The Anchorage School District has successfully operated two compressed natural gas school buses for two years.
    Idaho Efforts
    • (Biodiesel) The Meridian School District in suburban Boise has used Biodiesel (B20) in its school buses. The Blaine County School District in Hailey is also planning use B20 for several of its buses.

    Oregon Efforts
    • (Retrofit) The Beaverton School District has retrofitted 12 buses with diesel particulate filters and is using ultra-low sulfur diesel.
    • (Anti-idling) The State Department of Education has an anti-idling strategy. It includes a recommended maximum idle duration time. http://www.ode.state.or.us/supportservices/memos/2002_03/066_03.htm. Exit EPA disclaimer
    • (Retrofit) The Catlin Gabel School in Portland has retrofit 12 of their school buses with diesel particulate filters and using ultra-low sulfur diesel.
    Washington Efforts
    • (Retrofit) Puget Sound Clean Air Agency - 213 school buses have already been retrofitted with DOCs under the Diesel Solutions Program. 600 more DOCs are on order. Some school districts are using ultra-low sulfur diesel. http://www.pscleanair.org/dieselsolutions/index.shtml.Exit EPA disclaimer
    • (Retrofit) Washington Department of Ecology - Recent legislation has provided a revenue source for retrofitting school buses statewide. The initial goal is to retrofit at least 1,000 school buses with diesel oxidation catalysts.
    • (Anti-idling) Washington Department of Ecology has begun a voluntary program with incentives to reduce school bus and passenger car idling. It is called the "No Idle Zone - Keeping the Air Clean at Schools". http://www.ecy.wa.gov/programs/air/cars/no_IDLE.html Exit EPA disclaimer
    • (CNG) Three School Districts in the Olympia area together operate 49 dedicated or bi-fuel natural gas-powered buses.
    • (CNG) With the increased availability of CNG the Puget Sound Clean Cities Coalition is encouraging School Districts to consider this fuel in new Replacements. http://www.pugetsoundcleancities.org/Exit EPA disclaimer
    • (Biodiesel) B20 will soon be used by two school districts, one in Puget Sound and the other in Spokane.
