Description

The Axton Cross facility is listed with the Mass DEP as a Disposal Site, as defined in the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) (310 CMR 40.0006), under Release Tracking Number (RTN) 2-00059. The site is located approximately one mile southwest of the Holliston Town Center, between Rte 16 and Chicken Brook. Since 1967, the site was an Industrial Chemical Distributor for the textile, paper, rubber, metals and plastics industries. Prior to 1967, the Site was reported to have been undeveloped. Axton Cross received chemicals in bags, drums and bulk. The facility mixed batches of acetic acid, aqueous ammonia, and hydrofluoric acid at the facility. This material was either drummed or sold in bulk. An informational bulletin for the site advertised chlorinated solvent tank truck delivery, storage tank plan, spent-solvent buy-back policy, hazardous waste chemical disposal ( of 1% of business). The facility has interim status as a drum storage facility for off-spec drummed chemicals, which were returned to Axton Cross by customers. The facility closed in the early 1990's following bankruptcy. The property is currently leased to Planet Aid.

The site consists of approximately 9 acres of developed and undeveloped land with approximately 60% covered by 2 buildings (office/warehouse and a garage). The site is bounded by Chicken Brook and a small pond to the north and east, and rail road tracks to the north and west. To the south, the property is bounded by Cross Street. Beyond Cross Street, Chicken Brook flows into an extended wetland. Environmental media (soil, ground water, surface water, sediment, and indoor air) has been impacted by a wide range of industrial chemicals and petroleum-related products. Constituents of concern (COCs) include chlorinated ethenes (PCE, TCE, cis-1,2-DCE, and vinyl chloride), 1,1,1-TCA, methylene chloride, and BTEX constituents.
