Description

Dow Chemical, a 400 acre site in Ledyard, manufactures polystyrene granules/pellets, polystyrene foam , S/B latexes, and ABS (acrylonitrile, polybutadiene, and styrene terpolymers). The site operates a hazardous waste drum storage area. The site was investigated under a facility lead agreement and is being remediated under a RCRA 3013 order. The facility maintains a community advisory panel and held several public meetings on the remedy. EPA hosted one public meeting and a public hearing on the remedy selection. This site has had two areas of contaminated soil removed as interim measures and consolidation of contaminated soil (principally carbon tetrachloride) from two units consolidated into a CAMU (corrective action management unit) created within the footprint of one of the units (the southern landfill) for treatment by soil vapor extraction. Contaminated concrete in the floor of the active hazardous waste storage building has been dropped from Corrective Action and left as a closure issue if and when the use of the storage building is terminated.

Current Status
