Description

Former Synthetic Products Co., Stratford, CT. The site is located across the street and downgradient from the Raymark Superfund site, which is contributing to groundwater contamination at the site. The site has had numerous owners and uses since the 1930's. The former owner/operator, Synthetic Products, manufactured liquid PVC heat stabilizers and polyurethane products and stored hazardous wastes generated at the facility. Over the last few years, site owners working with CTDEP under the Property Transfer Program have conducted extensive remedial measures at the site, including removal of building floors and excavation of soils under the floors, removal of underground and above ground storage tanks, remediation of a former leach field by soil vapor extraction, removal of buried drums, and excavation of contaminated soils down to the water table from large portions of the site, which was later covered with clean fill and paved. The facility achieved EPA's two Environmental Indicators, Current Human Exposures Under Control and Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control in August of 2003.

The facility sits on a small triangular parcel of land bounded by three roads: Barnum Avenue Cutoff (Route 1) to the North, Veteran's Blvd to the South and Ferry Blvd and Interstate 95 to the East. The former Raymark facility (redeveloped into shopping mall including a Home Depot and a Wal-mart) is located across Route 1 to the immediate North. A VFW building shares the parcel of land with the facility (to immediate northwest). A second shopping mall which includes a Marshall's and a United States Post Office is located across Veteran's Blvd to the immediate South. [Photos below taken October 2005]
