Description

The site, located in Taunton, Massachusetts, consisted of four lagoons containing tannery waste. These lagoons were located on approximately 2.5 acres of a larger parcel of property owned by the City along the east side of the Taunton River just south of the Taunton wastewater treatment plant. The parcel is accessible from West Water Street to the north and Baker Road East to the south. The Taunton Municipal Light Plant maintains a dirt road which runs through the property to permit access to the high tension power lines which also run through the site. Waste disposal appears to have occurred on site from the 1950s until the early 1970s. Primary contaminant of concern was chromium found at levels as high as 150,000 parts per million. The lagoons received material from the former Geilch and Reuping East Tannery on West Water Street. The property was sold to Bay State Industrial Properties and subsequently transferred to the City of Taunton.

Current Status

A short term cleanup (REMOVAL) at the site was started on 7/23/98.

Work consisted of excavation of waste and contaminated soils. Material excavated during 1998 was treated with portland cement to reduce moisture and stabilize material. Material removed during 1999 did not require treatment. Material was permitted as a special waste and transported to the Taunton Municipal Landfill. The site was regraded and seeded. It is being maintained by the City of Taunton. Approximately 20,000 tons of waste and contaminated soil were removed from the site.
