Description

EPA received a report from the National Response Center of a chlorine release at 2635 Beacon St. on the Newton/ Boston line. Beacon Street was shut down shortly thereafter since the location is adjacent to Boston College. The college’s chemistry building nearest to the site was evacuated. EPA arrived at 2 p.m. and worked with the Boston Fire Department and the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection. The source of the release was a box truck that contained eight 150-pound cylinders of chlorine gas as well as other gas cylinders with materials such as argon and propane. The truck was owned by Airgas, Inc., and the containers, mostly empty, were being returned from a wastewater treatment plant. The driver had smelled chlorine, notified Airgas Emergency personnel (per company policy) and called 911.

The Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) team of the Boston Fire Department used a chlorine meter to determine that the chlorine measurements in the truck varied from .8 units to 14.1 units. The team identified a leaking cylinder valve and secured it with a vapor tight cap. Then, they exited and decontaminated immediately afterward. At 3:20 p.m., the team made a second entry to measure chlorine levels in the truck, and the air levels were determined to be safe.
