The city has had several properties approved to receiving funding for assessment work through their BF assessment grant. The city was recently recognized by the MA Office of Community Development with a Governor's Smart Growth Leadership award for the work the city performed in conjunction with the Montachusett Regional Planning Commission for the construction of the new city public library on a former brownfield site.

The cleanup grant is for the City of Gardner, MA to remediate contamination at the S. Bent & Bros. property located at 60 Mill Street and 85 Winter Street.
