EPA responded to a release at 72 Flint Street, Salem, MA. A concrete above ground tank (60x15x8 feet) had cracked at one corner. A thin stream of clear liquid was emitting from the c track. The tank held the remains of a water treatment system that served a leather tanning operation at the property. The facility is under demolition prior to development. Lab data provided by the developer indicated that levels of chromium+3 in the liquid range from 0.06mg/l to 742mg/l, and up to 2.6g/l. The liquid has not reached the nearby canal, but may have been releasing for several days prior to discovery. Other shallow concrete pits at the facility were found to contain up to several thousand gallons of waste oil.
MADEP and USCG were at the scene when EPA arrived.
The developer (David Zion) has assumed responsibility for removing the liquids and oils.
The release has been controlled and liquids/sludges have been removed from the open above ground tank and open pits by the developer. Case closed.
