The site is located at 80 Hastings Street, and is identified as parcels 2023-29, 2023-30, and 2022-36X on the city of Bridgeport tax maps. The site is located within a residential neighborhood and is abutted by residential properties to the north, south, and west. To the east, the site is bordered by commercial properties. An elementary school is located within 1/4 mile to the south. Open space areas frequented by the public, including Beardsley Park, the city zoo, and Stillman Pond are also located within 1/4 mile.
On November 28, 2001, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) notified EPA of the presence of cyanides, acids, bases, and metal solutions at this abandoned plating shop and requested EPA’s assistance in addressing the site. On December 7, 2001, EPA initiated a Preliminary Assessment/Site Investigation (PA/SI) which included walking the site with representatives of DEP and the City of Bridgeport and reviewing the inventory of hazardous substances present in vats, drums, and other containers. The PA/SI was concluded, and a removal action was recommended in a closure memo dated December 12, 2001.
The site includes a single story manufacturing building on level property totaling approximately 1 acre. The site was
used by Progressive Plating Technologies, Inc. for the electroplating of metal parts with cadmium, nickel, and zinc
until October 2001, when the company shut down operations and left the site unoccupied. Vats, drums, and other
containers of hazardous substances remain in the building. The site is abandoned and without electricity, heat, water,
or fire protection utilities.
Planned cleanup ("removal") activities will include a site walk with the cleanup contractor, securing the site, sampling and characterizing the hazardous substances present, consolidating and repackaging containers as needed, and disposing of hazardous substances at approved off-site disposal and recycling facilities. If EPA identifies hazardous substances which are usable products in good condition, EPA will seek to return such products to the manufacturer or another secure facility for re-use.
