Description

The Kenyon Piece Landfill Site is located off Sand Plain Road near the intersection of Sand Plain Road and County Trail [a.k.a. Rhode Island (RI) Route 2] in Charlestown, Washington County, RI. The Site consists of an irregular L-shaped 62-acre parcel of land identified on the Town of Charlestown Tax Assessor’s Map No. 25 as Lot No. 94. The former solid waste landfill, which is the focus of this removal action, measures approximately 2.5 acres and is roughly square-shaped. With the exception of the roughly square-shaped area cleared over the former solid waste landfill, no visible boundaries were observed to demarcate the location of the former solid waste landfill. The Site is accessed from Sand Plain Road via a dirt-and-gravel driveway that is secured by a chain-link gate. A stone wall and barbed-wire fence are located along the northwestern boundary. The dirt-and-gravel driveway is overgrown with vegetation and extends to a former solid waste landfill, which is also overgrown with vegetation. Hazardous substances are present in surface soils, groundwater, buried drums, and contaminated soils surrounding the drums at the Site. Confirmation of these buried drums were verified during the PA/SI. The highest concentrations were found in product encountered in and around the buried drums. Access to the Site is unrestricted and numerous paths are throughout the Site which are indicative of all terrain vehicle use. The remaining portions of the 62-acre Site are primarily wooded.
