Description
The Sibley Co., Haddam CT, manufactured printed circuit boards and flush mounted commutators for the computer, aerospace, and business machines industries at the 5 acre site from 1955 until 1986 when the facility was destroyed by a fire. Two sludge settling lagoons and one sludge storage lagoon were constructed at the facility in 1968, and lagoon wastes were removed during the 1980s.
Current Status
The Facility achieved EPA's Current Human Exposures Under Control Environmental Indicator in April of 2004. The facility has not achieved EPA's groundwater indicator because groundwater contamination in the immediate Bridge Street/Tylerville, CT area is widespread and complicated by a number of potential sources. The general Bridge Street/Tylerville, CT area has been identified for remedial investigation study by the Superfund Program of Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). Downgradient residential homes impacted by the low-level dissolved-phase chlorinated solvent contamination have been fitted with granulated activated carbon (GAC) systems and are periodically tested by CTDEEP.
The main site building was recently refurbished and sold or leased to a Chevrolet motor vehicle dealer. The site is also used for a variety of other commercial uses including a subsurface exploration (i.e., drilling) company.
