Description
The site consists of a .3-acre privately-owned residential property, which includes a single-family residence and a small commercial establishment (sandwich shop). It is located within the “Bay Street Suspected Fill Area,” an area-wide investigation of about 100 properties in the vicinity relative to manufactured gas waste. New England Gas Company, under the oversight by the RI Department of Environmental Management, conducted investigative and cleanup work relative to this larger project.
Current Status
EPA addressed the A Connell Street Site separately since the nature and origin of the contamination (i.e. mercury) was distinct from that of the “Bay Street Suspected Fill Area.” According to DEM’s files, the site was used for the disposal of waste from a local hat factory about 100 years ago. Remnants of mercury-bearing hat waste were found during soil sampling and cleanup activities.
