Description
The site is a vacant 1-acre lot used as an unlicensed landfill until approximately the late 1980s. Fill, construction debris, asphalt, scrap metal, and drums were disposed of at the site in an undocumented manner. The site is located within a residential neighborhood and is abutted by public and elderly housing complexes and single-family homes. An elementary school is located within 1/4 mile to the east. Drums buried at the site and associated contaminated soils contained hazardous substances including, but not limited to, toluene, trichloroethylene, and 3/4-methylphenol.
A time critical removal action, consisting of excavation and off-site disposal of drums of hazardous substances and associated contaminated soils, was begun as an EPA fund-lead action in August 2002. In March 2003, the project was taken over by a potentially-responsible party and its contractor, pursuant to an Administrative Order on Consent. The removal action is now complete. Over 2700 tons of drums and contaminated soils were excavated and disposed of off-site, and the Site has been restored to vegetative cover.
