Current Status
A Phase 1 Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA) was completed on 9/14/1998
A Phase 2 Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA) was completed on 12/15/1999
A Cleanup Options Study/Cost Estimate was completed on 12/15/1999.
The Office of State Planning's NH Coastal Program obtained an Assessment Grant from EPA to conduct assessments at different coastal brownfields sites, including the Craig Supply Company site. The NH Coastal Program hired a contractor, GZA (Geoenvironmental Corporation) to conduct a Phase I in 2000 and a Phase II in 2003 (which is not yet complete.) Phase I assessment included monitoring wells, soils testing, and measuring flows on the site. Phase II will consist of conducting observation and sampling at four monitoring wells on the east side of the site (wells will be located on University of New Hampshire property adjacent to brownfields site) to compare the movement of the contamination from the samples taken in Phase I. Phase II assessment should be complete by the end of the summer or fall of 2003 and the Remedial Action Plan (RAP) should be completed by the end of the year (December 2003). UNH owns the properties that surrounds the Craig Supply Company site and is interested in building a tunnel to go from the west side of campus to the east (to provide better access for the two sides of the campus). The tunnel (both for vehicle and pedestrian access) would take over most of the site with some room for some smaller administration buildings on the site. The town of Durham is also possibly interested in leveraging the property as a swap for other properties in the town or to use the site as a town parking lot.
