Description
On 27 March 2009, CT DEP removed approximately 100-150 14-pound bags of unstable organic peroxide from a wire manufacturing facility in Seymour, CT. After carefully assessing disposal options in consultation with EPA, CTDPH, and ATSDR, CT DEP decided to destroy the organic peroxide via a controlled burn at a remote location in the Naugatuck State Forest. CT DEP requested air monitoring support from EPA Region 1 to ensure the controlled burn did not create a significant release of hazardous substances into the atmosphere.
EPA Region 1 OSC Frank Gardner and 3 START personnel mobilized to the scene and integrated into the unified Command with burn location to conduct air monitoring. The organic peroxide destruction did not begin until air monitoring was in place. At approximately 2300 on 27 March 2009, the destruction of the organic peroxide was completed. OSC Gardner reported no significant air monitoring readings during the planned burn. OSC Gardner and START departed the scene.
