Creating a New Site in the WebCMS
WebCMS Web Site Creation Checklist
This list is for new sites that are being created in the WebCMS.
- Take the WebCMS training
- Request that a folder be created in the WebCMS.
- Edit Areanav file for Area
- Create Webpages
- Add metadata
- Account for pages with javascript
- Create managed links
- Import PDF files
- Publish content to epa.gov
Details
- Office/Region identifies Primary Alias/Folder in WebCMS
- Think about what the folder layout for your area.
- Identify the folder administrator for your web area.
- Think about the roles in the WebCMS (.doc) and who should be in which role.
- Office/Region completes start up kit
- Office/Region trained on Web CMS authoring, publishing.
- Request folder in WebCMS (Request for a new Folder / Area (blank) [.doc] | Request for a new Folder / Area (example) [.doc]).
- Edit the areanav file in folder. The areanav file contains all of the information that's related to the web area (e.g., sidebar links, area search code, contact us links, local style sheet, etc.) The
areanav.xml is created/modified by the webmaster for an area.
- Create the .xml content files in the WebCMS for each .html file
- Create managed links in your documents
- The WebCMS publishes in .html only.
- Account for pages with javascript.
- There is no inline JavaScript because javascript code can conflict with XML. Javascript needs to be in external files.
- Javascript in header section needs to be added to the Javascript tab
- Office/Region reviews content and validates metadata. Checks links too.
- Office/Region approves files and metadata for publishing.
- All content is created and published from WebCMS.
- Make sure your personnel are trained for their respective roles.
- Consider adding additional content authors—the WebCMS makes page creation much more straightforward for nontechnical personnel.
- Shift your focus from managing look and feel to managing the content and its metadata.
- Invest saved Webmaster time in improving our visitors' ability to discover and access the information they need to complete their tasks at
www.epa.gov and keeping content current and accurate.
- Begin rigorous Records Management practices, through the WebCMS connection with the EPA electronic records-management systems (when supported).
