Page Construction in WebCMS
A web page built in Documentum consists of many parts. They are the content template, the content template rules, and the presentation files (created and modified at the admin level).
- Content template - the EPA basic content template is a form with 4 fields.
- HTML Title Field <title></title>
- Required Field
- The actual content of the field is the same as now <title>Page Title</title>
- You only have to fill in the page title. Area Name | US EPA are part of the presentation template and appear on the HTML file.
- Text only field. If you try to add something more than text, it will not be retained.
- H1 Title Field
- This is the content that will appear in the H1 tag <h1>Page Title</h1>
- Text only field
- Not required. This means you can save the page without completing the field. Reality is, other than a homepage, EPA standards say there will be an <h1> title on all HTML pages.
- First Paragraph Field
- This is a chunk that we hope to use for:
- Search Engine results
- Intro snippet that could be used on automated pages. An automated page is a page that is created by the system based on business rules instead of being manually built and maintained.
- For example, a Recent Additions page rule could say any page added to the NERL site will automatically be added to the Recent Additions page. Each entry will consist of the date posted, the H1 title as the link and the 1st paragraph field as the description.
- As you create new content, good overview descriptive paragraphs will help improve EPA's user experience.
- You can use any HTML code that you use now in this field.
- The field can actually contain more than a paragraph. If you use a top right aligned multipurpose box, it would also go into the 1st paragraph field.
- Content field
- The rest of the content
- Text and code
- Content template rules - what can go into a field in the content template
- HTML Title - text only
- H1 Title - text only
- First Paragraph - text and code
- Content - text and code
- Presentation files - the EPA look and feel
- Header - lozenge, logos
- Sidebar
- Global Footer
Two EPA additions to the out of the box documentum web object
- Extended Metadata - created per file. During migration, existing metadata will be populated into the metadata object. Metadata is required. You can not save and exit the file in WCMS until the 1st page of metadata is completed.
When you create data on Close and Save or Close, you will be placed into the metadata. The first tab labeled Primary Metadata has the primary/required metadata.
- Title (DC.title): Autofilled from earlier entry
- Description (DC.description): Brief Description of page content
- Open Keywords (DC.epa.keyword): Retained from current template. Any keywords that are on the current pages will be imported into Documentum. Keywords also allows the use of words that are not part of the EPA taxonomy. For example: A document is known as the purple book. That's not part of the EPA taxonomy but people will search for it.
- Date Created (DC.date.created): Autofilled
- Publisher (DC.Creator): Info lives in areanav file. Populated from areanav file
- Agency Function (DC.subject.epabrm): EPA taxonomy. There's going to be more discussion and training about EPA's Information Architecture and taxonomy.
- Information Type (DC.type): EPA taxonomy. There's going to be more discussion and training about EPA's Information Architecture and taxonomy.
- Channel: DC.epachannel: Major level subjects
- Education & Awareness
- Geographic Areas
- Laws & Regulations
- Science & Technology
- Language (DC.language): Autofilled based on template. If a Spanish template is used, it fills in with ES instead of English.
- Review Content (DC.date.reviewed): Autofilled with a year + 5 days
- areanav.xml - the areanav file contains all of the information that's related to the web area (e.g., sidebar links, contact us links, the search tssms, local style sheet, etc.) The areanav.xml is created/modified by the webmaster for an area.
This powerpoint demo shows how a page is constructed from the WebCMS.
This image shows more detail about a page and what is populated from where but the powerpoint demo is clearer.
