EPA Web Taxonomy

The EPA Web Taxonomy allows audiences easy access to relevant information from EPA programs, by using a common vocabulary to describe EPA web content. The specification includes the core metadata elements that are required to find, use and manage items on EPA's website. The controlled vocabularies and the metadata specification are collectively known as the EPA Web Taxonomy.

The Web Taxonomy supports the following information delivery goals:
-To allow users reliably search for all content on a public or internal website (or the CMS repository) for example, all content that is related to the “Endangered Species Act.”
-To provide grouped search results. For example, all content that is of the type “Basic Facts & Information” grouped by industries regulated by the EPA.
-To automatically gather and organize content for presentation on the public website. For example, the most current content item that is of the type “News & News Releases” that are related to “Hurricane” emergencies in “Louisiana.”
-To be applicable to content on public websites as well as content on intranets.
-To be readily implementable with a Content Management System (CMS).

The Web Taxonomy is closely tied to the Information Architecture, in that the selected terms help feed the content to the IA.
