2006 National Inventory Tables

Back

The tables listed below are from the Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2004, which provides information on anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. These tables are provided electronically so that users can easily view and analyze the entire time series of data developed for the report (i.e., 1990 to 2004). You can follow the links below to download individual tables in CSV format (for analysis and exporting to spreadsheet). You can also download a zip file (156 kb) with all the tables in CSV format.

To export to a spreadsheet, save the CSV file from your internet browser and then open it in using your spreadsheet program. The tables are comma-delimited, so be sure to select the appropriate import mechanism to properly format the table.

Chapters
Executive Summary: Summarizes the latest U.S. anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and trends from 1990 through 2003, including emissions of CO2, N2O, CH4, HFCs, PFCs, and SF6. In addition, emissions of the ozone depleting substances and NOx, CO, NMVOCs, and SO2 are presented. Tables that are also presented that focus on fossil fuel combustion, transportation, electric utilities, and trends as compared to various drivers, such as GDP, population, weather, and other factors.

Introduction: Provides background information on estimating emissions from greenhouse gases and the U.S. Inventory process. Gives and overview of the methodologies and data sources used, and discusses important issues in conducting an inventory such as identifying key sources, QA/QC, uncertainty, and completeness. This chapter also introduces the structure of the report.

Trends in Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Presents estimates of U.S. anthropogenic emissions for the years 1990 through 2003 by gas and sector, general emission trends, and the factors that influence these trends. Additionally, tables are presented that divide emissions into economic sectors instead of the chapters presented in the remainder of the report. Emissions from ambient air pollutants are also discussed.

Energy: Emissions from fossil fuel combustion comprise the vast majority of energy-related emissions, with CO2 being the primary gas emitted. Stationary and mobile combustion of fossil fuels also emit CH4 and N2O, as well as NOx, CO, and NMVOCs. Other energy-related activities include carbon emitted from the non-energy use of fuels, CO2 and ambient air pollutants from natural gas flaring, CO2 and N2O emissions from municipal solid waste combustion, and CH4 from natural gas systems, petroleum systems, coal mining, and abandoned coal mines. Tables addressing international bunker fuels and CO2 from biomass combustion for energy are also provided. These sources are not accounted for in the energy totals according to IPCC guidelines. Additional detail on estimating emissions from energy activities can be found in Annexes 2, 3, and 4.

Solvent and Other Product Use: The use of solvents and other chemical products can result in emissions of various ozone precursors. NMVOCs, commonly referred to as "hydrocarbons," are the primary gases emitted from most processes employing organic or petroleum based solvents. Because many of these industrial applications also employ thermal incineration as a control technology, CO and NOx combustion by-products are also reported with this source category. N2O emissions from product usage are also reported.

Land-Use Change & Forestry: Provides an assessment of the net greenhouse gas flux resulting from forest lands, croplands, and settlements and additional sources of N2O emissions by major land use type.  Greenhouse gas flux has been estimated for the following categories: 1) forest land remaining forest land, 2) croplands remaining croplands, and 3) settlements remaining settlements.  annexes 3.12 and 3.13 provide additional detail on net changes in carbon stocks from LUCF.

Waste: Presents CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions from waste management and treatment activities. Emissions of NOx, CO, and NMVOC from waste activities are also included. Emissions from the use of energy in these waste activities are accounted for in the Energy chapter. Annex 3.14 provides additional detail for estimating CH4 emissions from landfills.

Recalculations and Improvements: Each year the EPA not only recalculates and revises the emission and sink estimates for all years, it also attempts to improve the analyses themselves through the use of better methods or data as well as the overall usefulness of the report. The tables in this section summarize the quantitative effect of these changes on U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and sinks, relative to the previously published U.S. Inventory (i.e., 1990-2002 report).
