About 2,300 pounds of carbon equivalent per person (16% of our individual greenhouse gas emissions) are released to the atmosphere through our use of personal transportation every year. And, in fact, our emissions in this area are increasing.
- The average fuel economy of passenger vehicles has decreased by about 6.6% between 1987 and 1997.
- Over the same period, the average vehicle miles traveled per person has increased by 33%.
Together, these two trends have increased our greenhouse gas emissions from personal travel.
And for information about the vehicle or vehicles you currently use, or vehicles you might like to use, visit the Department of Energy's Fuel Economy Web Site. This site is designed to help the public factor energy efficiency into car buying decisions. This site also offers information on the connection between fuel economy, advanced technology, and the environment.
